Dolores the "Princess of Mexico"

In the Silent film era, Del Rio was often thought of as the female version of Rudolph Valentino. She was known as the "Princess of México".

Dolores Del Rio

Dolores Del Rio, was a Mexican film actress. She was a star of Hollywood films during the silent era and in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Later, she became a famous actress in Mexican films. She was thought to be one of the most beautiful actresses of her time and was the first Latin American movie star to have international appeal. With the arrival of the talkies she was considered one of the principal Art Deco symbols of beauty. Dolores del Río's appearance influenced Joan Crawford. In 1930, when Crawford emerged as beauty personified in the entire world, but especially in Hollywood, the women imitated her style of dress and make-up. Gone was the style of heavy pancake and little heart shaped mouths. In its place the angular face, the sculptures look came into vogue.

The 1928 production Ramona was the third film version of the Helen Hunt Jackson novel of the same name, first dramatized by D. W. Griffith in 1910. Dolores Del Rio plays the ward of domineering California sheep rancher Senora Moreno. Escaping her cruel guardian, Ramona accepts the fact she will never find true happiness. Though she loves Moreno's grandson Felipe, Ramona does not want him to bear the stigma of a mixed marriage, so she marries Allesandro, an Indian shepherd. Misfortune continues when her husband is lynched by bigoted ranchers; shortly thereafter, her baby dies from injuries from a raid. Suffering a nervous breakdown, Ramona wanders into the woods, having lost all memory. But Felipe rescues her, snapping her out of her amnesia by singing her favorite childhood song. Ramona was remade in 1936 with Loretta Young and Don Ameche.
